Jay Dunn's Background

I was born and raised in Etowah County, Alabama. From a young age, I knew I was going to be an attorney when I grew up. However, I did not expect that I would make a detour on my way to becoming an attorney. In 2006, at the age of 21, I was hired as a police officer at the Gadsden Police Department. My first day on the job, I was involved in a foot pursuit resulting in torn pants and an apprehended motorcycle theft suspect.
After I finished field training, I continued to go to school during the day while working night shift. While in law school, I was promoted to the rank of sergeant. I graduated law school and passed the bar exam. A few months after passing the bar exam, I was seriously injured in the line of duty. During a foot pursuit, I suffered a dislocated shoulder, torn labrum, and closed head injury. This experience was the first realization how stacked the cards are against you after suffering an injury.
After a surgery and nearly a year of intense physical therapy, I was released to go back to work at the police department. I was promoted to the rank of lieutenant shortly after. I was offered a job at a local law firm based on commission from self generated cases. I began to practice law during the day while working as the night watch commander. Since I was still a police officer, personal injury law was the only type of law I could practice without the risk of running into conflicts while on duty.
Since I could only practice personal injury law, my first full year of practice, I only made $6,000.00. Thankfully, I still had my salary from the police department. Even though I hadn't made a lot of money yet, I found that since I knew so many people in the community, once it was known I was practicing law, I generated a lot of cases. As I gained more experience, I discovered that the skills I developed as a police officer transferred seamlessly into the practice of law.
After a short stint as a police captain, I found that my practice had grown to a point that I could not maintain working in both fields full time. I left full time law enforcement and opened my own law firm. I started over with zero cases and a used laptop bought off amazon. After a nerve wrecking week or two after opening my own firm, the first case came in. Shortly after, more and more cases came in. Within a month or so of opening my firm, I was contacted by Southside Police Department about a part-time position. I accepted the position and went back to working night shift 29 hours a week. Thanks to the extra income, I was able to aggressively advertise. I filmed commercials, leased billboards, and ran online ads. Over the last 5 years, I have recovered millions of dollars for my clients.
While on the wild ride of starting my own law firm, I became engaged and started a family. In my spare time, I love spending time with my Fiancé Jonna and our two babies, Walker and Stella. While I'm still an active police officer, I spend most of my free time with my family and not patrolling the streets.
